The Tenafly, NJ theater group, The Garage Theater Group, originated in 1993. Co-founders, Michael Bias and Debbie Slevin’s, goal is to have a “place for professional artists and youth artists to be able to grow and stretch.”
Seventeen years later they have succeeded in having achieved their goal of providing a theater that will “educate, inform, and connect the community.” One of the ways they have succeeded is by having a post production discussion with the audience. These discussions included the playwrights, directors, actors, etc.
When the Garage Theater Group started out it was a vagabond group that spent the next 10 years using different venues in Bergen County, NJ. In 2003, they were invited by Fairleigh Dickinson University to use the Becton Theatre as their resident theater. Since then they have been able to further achieve their dream of having a “place for professional artists and youth artists to be able to grow and stretch.”
The Garage Theater Group now has a Youth Conservatory, which trains, entertains, and educates young people from the ages of 6-18 years of age. Classes in acting are offered at age appropriate levels and experiences. The Garage also offers theatre dance and individual acting instruction.
Another venue that the Garage offers is a Summer Camp. The workshops include acting, voice, and movement, all aspects of productions, a full production at the end of the session, and trips to Broadway shows
